CHAPTER SIXTEEN

As it turns out, another power of John’s is that he can basically scale sheer walls. He can’t actually, but his fingernails have grown in longer and thicker since he Awoke, which lets him use them like claws in order to climb things. When he gets up there, I order Garg back into the portal, and the two of us start forward into the darkness.

It’s starting to seem commonplace, but I still get a shiver as torches blaze to life to mark our entry into a room. This time, we find ourselves in a short, cobblestone hallway with a handful of rooms branching off in all directions.

John walks up to the first door, which is wooden and locked tightly. He draws his hand back and essentially high-fives it, smashing it into splinters. Slowly, the two of us peer inside and find a royal bedroom, complete with a canopied bed, mirrors, and a large variety of Norse-themed items, such as horns, axes, and shields.

“Interesting,” John muses as he walks inside and starts rifling through things. “You wouldn’t expect to find something like this inside a Rift, you know?”

“Does that mean you’re experienced with Rifts?” I remark dryly. “Frankly, I’m still a little confused about this all.”

“Fair point,” John chuckles. He bends down, grabs the bed frame, and flips the thing onto its side. A mighty crash resounds through the room, and he lets out a long breath when we find nothing but dust bunnies. “I’m just putting the pieces together. Dungeons seem to be fairly small—at least the low-level ones I’ve been through so far. This Rift looks more like a collection of dungeons, a whole bunch of things all squished together.”

“True,” I muse. I turn and walk out of the room while John starts rifling through drawers and a few small chests. “What are you doing now?”

“Looting!” John beams as he comes walking out with a few handfuls of silver jewelry. “I figure that if you aren’t considered encumbered, you’re not playing the game right. I know this isn’t a game, but …”

He laughs and dumps the gold into his inventory then flexes his muscles. I follow along behind him and raise an eyebrow.

“Is that why you’re so strong?”

“Yup. My special skill is that my strength increases in proportion to the amount of stuff in my inventory. There are a few limitations on it, but that’s the general idea.”

“Fascinating.” I shake my head. We walk up to the next door, and I slide my dagger in between the wood and the stone, then slash downward, cutting through the lock. Inside, we find another room, and John starts looting things once more. “I always had a particular affinity for animals prior to this. I know it’s considered childish, but I would go to the zoo—any zoo—at least once a month.”

“Makes you wonder if the System Administrators have profiles on us, or if the system itself can just scan that sort of thing.” John flips over a bed then yelps. Underneath is a skeleton, which starts to rise, bearing a dagger in its hand.
